A Poem…God Save Us

At first God saved us from small bands of silent men

Stealing through the desert in search of caravans and camel drivers
stealthier and smarter in the ways of the world

As we, a faith-powered few fueled by a new metaphysic went in search of an answer
in a place where heaven-on-earth comes in two flavors: green and wet

God saved us from Ancient Semite cousins living in sun-baked cities made of mud

With walls tall enough to protect but just enough

Ruled by kings with a king’s street smarts if not much else that was kingly

Who knew the politics of rule went over best

With dusk-to-dawn feasts and enemies’ heads

Placed on sticks

From other kin with no unseen God

Who lived in great places and created engineering marvels undreamed of

by Hebrew poet-shephards, wanderers and seers

to whom math was a thing for Greek and Persian

and simple verses of praise and hope the thing for those who loved HaShem.

God saved us from all that was and is Rome

After 2000 years of hell on earth and social death and death-by-ghetto, mosque, cathedral,
Swastika, Stalin and (death by) the conviction of the least vehement of foes and maybe even the best of friends
that we would never be quite out of the top drawer
-this last infinitely more cutting than the death of a
thousand cuts and in its own way more powerful than the killing fields of the OstFront…

And now we live in an age that says you may not hate

Because hate is wrong and

The smell of death camps

was so strong

That hate itself is devoutly to be feared and exterminated

…unless preached with reasoned arguments

spoken by well dressed types on prime time and cable

so if in the end our algorithm-without-end of hate, persecution, death and survival of the Folk

were to poop-out and die

and we were left with no arch bully to fear and to fight

where, then, would we be

and whom then would we love?

Ourselves?

After a breakup

I took my kitty for a walk

In a cold and steady rain

I tried to take my mind off my sorrow

And that sharp and ice cold pain

Of losing the love that made me happy

And was now forever lost

And made me realize the great big secret of love’s

Great big cost

I heard a cry from way down low

That caused me to look down

And there was my little kitty

Wearing an awful frown

She continued to meow and whimper

As she bravely stared me down

But I was in another place and not quite ready yet

To hear the cries

of one so small and so wise

Who night after night curled up with love against my chest

And fixed me with those great big eyes

And had a soul made up of daffodils

And silver moonbeams

And never ending hoping

Whose only wish

Seemed

To be

To get me to stop

My moping

And wants me to look with trust in her great big eyes

So she can carry out

Her task

To let me know

In no uncertain terms

That yes

This too

Shall pass.

A Poem…“Until there was you”

There were others before you..

Some fair some dark some both

light and lively

Some gloomy some doomy

Some sick some healthy

Some happy some not

Some cold some mean some loving some hot

There were some who smiled inwardly at the beauty of life

And some who didn’t like the thought’

Of being a wife

Some rough

Some needy

Some giving

Some poor

Some rich

Some chaste

Some begging’

For more

But in the end

There was nothing

There was nothing to do

Because what

They had in common

Was that

None

Of

Them

Was

you

A Poem About Relating

You gotta relate

Relate, relate, relate

It doesn’t matter who you are

Whether you’re short or tall

Black or white

Gay or straight

Whether you’re stone cold single or looking for a mate

No man is an island

If you’re looking for a date

Or searching for your mate

Don’t just sit around

And wait for fate

Get yourself ready

it’s never too late

To relate

A Poem about Finding Mr. Right

You’re better off with your average schmuck

because he won’t need any nippin’ or tuckin’

You can let your guard down and keep on truckin’

He’s got a soul and it may run deep

And when it comes to the L word he plays for keeps

And though he may not have a tailor making his shirts

Doesn’t mean that his mind is down in the dirt

The finer things of life like justice and art

May also be things that are right up his alley

So if he doesn’t have diplomas covering his walls

Don’t be afraid to make him your pal-ley.

So if Mr. Right doesn’t come through with those calls

Look for Mr. Real

To come running to you.

Poem…”On Finding The One”

When you get to a point where you know

that any situation at all

Anytime

Can take you to where you want to go

To create whole worlds for yourself

worlds without end

Then you will not need anything

But you yourself

And your own existence

Will be much much more

Than enough

And at that point you will find

The One

A Poem: “Space and Time”

“Space and Time”

Is each one of us formed of the Space and Time

In which we were born and in which we have lived?

Of promises made by planets and light streaks in

The night sky?

Of movement itself and darkness and light and the

Inexpressible feeling that grabs us when we look up

At a night sky and dream of going home; of being at

home with what we see overhead and letting our hearts

overflow with the universe that is within struggling

to escape and find its soul mate in the universe without
